Grand Centre Point Ratchadamri, Bangkok

I wrote this article in 2015 and updating details again in 2018 during our recent stay.

We had chosen Grand Centre Point Ratchadamri for this trip once again. We spent 3 nights in a 5-star (self-acclaimed luxury) business hotel some three years ago and it fits the bill to Centrally-Located, Family Friendly and Affordable Rates! Initially, I was skeptical because we had always pampered ourselves in Bangkok with renowned brands like Hyatt Erawan, Intercontinental and Shangri-la. I wondered how luxurious a rate of $150 nett a night [in 2015] can be. This year in 2018, we paid S$150++ a night instead of nett. Still very affordable!

It is indeed a business hotel but ironically, houses children entertainment that surpasses all that we've experienced in the aforementioned international brands. On level F (the facilities floor), I call it the FUN floor, you will find a swimming pool surrounded by lush greens and timber decks, a playroom fully equipped with toys, a 85sqm indoor playground with a foosball table, a beautifully-maintained reading room which has an array of children [board] books, a movie room fully blacked-out and sound-proofed for the whole family to watch Baymax in and a gaming room with computers and headphones for the older kids. Did I mention that there is a resident lounge on the same floor for us parents to enjoy a freshly brewed cup of coffee while the children play to their hearts' contents? Best of all, you need not pay anything extra than your room rate to enjoy these facilities. Not only were the children on cloud9, we as parents were too! We could catch a breather while they played around without heightened supervision. We almost missed our flight from lingering a tad too long on Level F on going home day. *woops*

Walking into the lobby, I thought it looked elegant. I heaved a sigh of relief to a good first impression. Walking out of the elevator on the 40th floor where we will stayed [oh wow! We were put on the 40th floor again in 2018], I commented disappointingly, "Awww not a carpeted corridor? I guess the room isn't going to be carpeted as well."

Don't ask me why but I have this thing about carpets and hotels. I was ready to pout when Meyer slid the keycard in to unlock the door. Oh my goodness was I in for a surprise! I loved the room! It wasn't carpeted but it was very homely. The floor-to-ceiling white wooden louvered shutters that lined our spectacular view did it for me. Ewan and Faye went straight to the window and stood there in silence to take in the cityscape. We enjoyed a lookout of towering buildings, old architectures and a modest  golf course. They spent their time admiring the view every time we returned from our outings, every night before the sleep and every morning when they wake. I too, enjoyed lounging by the window and sharing a moment with them.

Ours was a Grand Deluxe, their basic category, which is fully equipped with a mini kitchen and dining room. We were provided with a full-sized refrigerator, microwave, stove, pots and pans, utensils, washer/dryer and water boiler. Basically, we are ready to cook up three meals for little Faye who is a fussy eater!

In our most recent trip [2018], we were upgraded to a suite! There is a promotion for booking directly with the hotel which entitles you a free upgrade upon availability. The Grande Suite is 69sqm, very comfortable for our family of four. Faye slept in a baby cot just the way she liked it while Ewan bunked in between Meyer and I.

There kitchenette was a lot bigger than the Grand Deluxe Room too which can be used for whipping up meals on days you feel like staying in.

My only complain is that the dryer returned me damp clothes. There were instructions and a packet of washing powder provided. Either I didn't understand the instructions well enough or it just can't do it's job of drying the clothes properly. It did warn us about not letting the dryer go for more than 30 minutes but because they were damp, we went three rounds of drying. What happened next? *haha* Ewan's t-shirts now belong to Faye. They shrunk! I obviously didn't know how to use it.

The hotel has 2 breakfast venues. Please check where your entitlement for breakfast will be. If it is on the 8th floor, do request for a change to Mesamis Cafe. Level 8 is quite a mess [bad, like a canteen to cater to certain rowdy tour groups]. Although the buffet spread is pretty basic, it is still a lot more pleasant dining in Mesamis Cafe than the one upstairs.

Where:
It is situated between Hyatt Erawan and Anantara. Not the best location since there's no BTS right in front of the property but it is walking distance to Central World, Amarin and Siam Paragon. If you are brave enough like us, you can take the Pedestrian Sky Walk to Siam Paragon [Hotel to Siam Paragon is a 1.1km walk]. It took us 15 minutes to get there by foot and if you think your kids are complainers, bring a stroller. However, there is also a Ratchadamri BTS station just around the corner from the hotel and it brings you to Siam station where Siam Paragon is in just one stop. I like it here because it is quiet and less busy unlike Amari Watergate.
